ROOT project launches with stakeholder event in Coimbra
On 1 April 2026, the ROOT project held its first dissemination and launch event in Coimbra, Portugal, bringing together around 40 participants from academia, industry, the public sector and civil society.
Hosted the day after the project’s kick-off meeting, the event focused on one of the central challenges addressed by the project: how to better align emerging skills needs and career guidance with the rapid evolution of the Earth Observation (EO) sector.
The event featured a round table discussion with Fátima Matias, Milva Carbonaro, Machiel Bos, Vasco Mantas and Rita Fernandes, who shared perspectives on current sector challenges, emerging competences and the importance of improving career guidance approaches for EO-related professions.
A key moment of the session was the presentation by Machiel Bos on the work developed by TeroMovigo, illustrating how innovation and specialised expertise are shaping new professional profiles and skills requirements within the sector.
The discussion highlighted the importance of continuous collaboration between stakeholders from different backgrounds and sectors to ensure that education, training and career guidance systems remain responsive to labour market developments.
The event also marked the public launch of the ROOT project and its mission to support professional transitions and strengthen skills development within the Earth Observation ecosystem over the next three years.
